Platform

Austrian Coorindation Platform for Ecological Network

The platform represents a  association of experts who have declared their willingness to support the goals of the platform with their expertise in the best possible way. No obligations arise from the declaration of intent. Participation in the platform is on a voluntary basis. Two meetings (Q2 and Q4) are planned annually.
Central communication media are the thematic platform www.lebensraumvernetzung.at as well as the already existing social media presences on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/lebensraumvernetzung) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/dievernetzer).

Goals of the Austrian Coordination Platform for Ecological Network

  1. Legal anchoring of the examination of habitat networking
  2. Knowledge exchange and transfer (research, implementation projects, applications, etc.)
  3. Coordination of criteria for habitat connectivity
  4. Contact point for questions regarding habitat networking
  5. Provide current planning bases

Next steps

The continuous further development of this expert platform will also be a challenge in the future. The broadest possible establishment of the Austrian Coordination Platform for Ecological Networks at the national level can be achieved through the topic-specific expansion of the circle of experts. In this way, contrary developments and trends with regard to the permeability of the landscape can be recognized in time and effectively counteracted.

In addition to the topics listed in the objectives, the experts of the Coordination Platform intend to pay increased attention to the topic of renewable energy development with regard to possible negative impacts on habitat connectivity. Future meetings will focus on this topic.

The new start or continuation of the strategic partnership with the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture and possible framework conditions for this were put on the agenda of the platform meeting in the first half of 2023.

The platform is based on voluntariness and the personal commitment of the individual experts. In the long run, however, a basic financing of the platform and the individual experts would be helpful to ensure continuity in the support of the various topics and tasks.

The necessity of a functional ecological network to ensure the genetic exchange of wildlife populations and habitat connectivity does not end at national borders. Transnational and international cooperation and coordination should therefore also pursue the goal of securing migratory axes across borders and harmonizing spatial planning with neighboring countries. Transnational and international cooperation and coordination should therefore also pursue the goal of securing migratory axes across borders and harmonizing spatial planning with neighboring countries. A first step in this direction is the planned DACH cooperation - initial cooperation efforts with institutions from Germany and Switzerland responsible for habitat networking form a starting point for the future development of these urgently needed cross-border initiatives.
